Red Oak Tree Leaves. Northern red oak is native to the midwest and is one of the faster growing oaks for the home landscape. White oak acorns mature quicker than the fruits of red oaks.
The leaves are handsome throughout the borne separately on same tree. If the tree still has leaves, then this makes identification much easier. Lobes are uneven in size and length, those along the upper half short and broad. Leaves are variable but usually have a prominent pair of lobes toward the leaf tip.
Look closely at the picture above, (click on it to enlarge it if you have to), and note the length of the rays in both types of wood.
Oaks are classic shade trees that bring wildlife to your yard for food and shelter. The terms red oak and white oak refer to general groups of trees. The leaves of the white oaks typically feature lobes the red oak group includes leaves with an array of appearances. Autumn brings many delights here in idaho, as the skies are so blue on some days, the sun still warms body and soul and the turning leaves of the red oak.
